When you set up an appointment to go look at a house that you may be interested in, you want to be sure to follow a few simple rules that help increase the chances that you are getting the full picture. Here are some of the things you want to do when you arrive at the house:
Take some time to peruse the yard first
Take a walk around the yard before you go into the house. This is going to help give you a feel for the area. You may notice some things you really like about the yard, and you may even be lucky enough to meet one of the people that may end up being your neighbors. Get relaxed and ready to enter the house with the right frame of mind.
Don't rush through any of the rooms
As you go from room to room, you want to pay attention to all the little details you can without overwhelming yourself. Take time to imagine how the furniture can be situated in each room, what kind of drapes you would like in the rooms, whether you would like to put an area rug in the room, etc. By taking a bit of extra time in all the rooms, you will be able to get a stronger feeling as to whether or not this is going to be the right place.
Have a list of questions with you to ask the realtor
Before you go to any house, it's a good idea to have a list of questions ready so you don't get home and remember that there were a lot of things you wanted to ask and forgot to. Some examples of the types of questions you may have can include questions about any updating that may have been done to the electrical or plumbing sytems, how old the roof is, whether or not the attic is fully insulated (if you don't plan on making a trip up there to check it out for yourself), and anything else that you want to make sure you know about the house if you are seriously considering placing an offer on it.
Don't be afraid to ask to see the house a second time
Sometimes it can take more than one time looking at a house to really figure out if it is the best one for you or not. This is a huge decision, and you want to make sure you are right, so if it takes going back through the house again, then you should do it.
